Singapore's Lighthouse Pictures announced the pre-sell of a new Yasmin Ahmad movie to Korean-based international film distributor Film Messenger last week in Cannes, France.
The Malaysian director, famed for controversial movies on the home front that win international acclaim abroad like "Sepet" and "Muallaf" (although her last movie "Talentime" earlier in the year did register as one of her 'quietest' projects yet) is to direct a biopic of Singaporean triathlete Thaddeus Cheong Wing Kit, who died aged 17 from a heart failure during the run-up to the SEA Games in 2007.
The movie will draw from the book "Running The Full Distance: Thaddeus Cheong", written by the late athlete's aunt, Belinda Wee, and will be timed for the inaugural Youth Olympics in 2010 according to a press release.
Managing Director of Film Messenger Choi Yoon Hee is quoted as saying: "I have long admired Yasmin's work, and it is so moving and so rare to find such an internationally marketable, socially beneficial film about sportsmanship, family, friendship and unyielding determination."
An early synopsis of the movie includes many dramatic and heart-wrenching highlights, such as strangers turning up at Thaddeus' funeral, whose children received free private coaching from him unbeknownst to his family.
"Go, Thaddeus!" is scheduled for release in Singapore, Malaysia and South Korea in August 2010.
