Qalam tells the tale of a Buddhist monk in search of enlightenment, or more aptly (and ironically), of "Allah" ('God' in Arabic, generically speaking and not Muslim-centric). Along the monk's journey, Hadi inserts an acute observation of our decadent, materialistic world through the different scenarios of random passerby. Qalam is entertaining because there is an honest attempt to establish a straight-forward narrative -- an oft-neglected trait in independent short films. When one peels beyond the surface stereotypes depicted, there is a deeper message which highlights the absence of spirituality in this short film.
