Seminar Series 1 : FILM NARRATIVE : SPEAKING IN FRAMES
Naeim Ghalili explores the types of stories that appeal to an international audience and also the jury of film festivals. The talk serves as a platform for an audience of students and young filmmakers to explore local stories and see the importance of structuring narratives so that the films can cross borders and engage an international audience. Naeim draws upon his international involvement and uses some of the films that he has worked on to give examples of what will work with a local audience and whether it will do the same with an international audience, as well as appeal to an international film festival jury. The insights gained from this talk will enable the audience to construct and structure their film narratives that will take them beyond borders, and at the same time, enable them to express their feelings and aspirations for their country.
Workshop 1 : DAZZLING SPECTACLES: VISUAL EFFECTS AND ANIMATION IN FILM
No film today, be it live or animated, is complete without any manner of visual effects or animation. The advances in technology has enabled whatever the mind can imagine to be brought forth onto the screen. Rhythm & Hues Malaysia has contributed to the soaring of the imagination through many Hollywood spectacles such as Alvin and the Chipmunks (2007) and Yogi Bear (2010) where some of the work was done in Malaysia. Through clips from completed films, this seminar reveals the intricate planning and processes required to bring animated realism and visual effects to the big screen as well as touch on the production design processes necessary for visual storytelling.
Seminar Series II : TRANSLATING WORDS INTO IMAGES – THE CRAFT OF THE FILM DIRECTOR
Screenplay is an important tool in filmmaking. It is the task of the film director to
translate the screenplay or words into cinematic images. Translating words into image is
not easy because it demands a grasp of story and uses style and technique to bring it to
the screen. This seminar is to expose the audience to the methods used in transferring
a story into film.
Workshop II : GOING WITH THE 3-D STEREOSCOPIC CAMERA
Stereoscopy (also called stereoscopics or 3-D imaging) refers to a technique for creating or enhancing the illusion of depth in an image by presenting two offset images separately to the left and right eye of the viewer. These two-dimensional images are then combined in the brain to give the perception of 3-D depth. This workshop is to give exposure to the participants (students/filmmakers alike) about the features and characteristics of the 3-D stereoscopic camera.
Workshop III : KICK AND PUNCH: WORKSHOP ON FIGHT CHOREOGRAPHY FOR FILM
Date: 22 June 2012
This workshop will be conducted by Marzuki Ismail who has an excellent track record in executing action and stunt segments for feature films. His handiwork can be seen in the recent feature, Bunohan (2011) which had scenes of muay thai fighting. Marzuki will explain the important elements in fights and stunts for film so that it will appear realistic on screen. Marzuki will also expound on the importance of physical and mental preparations necessary for actors involved in fight and stunt scenes. This workshop will also be useful for film directors and cameramen to understand camera positioning so as to make the fight and stunt scenes more credible on screen.
Seminar Series III : INDEPENDENT FILMMAKING: THEMES, STYLES AND APPROACHES
The session brings a young filmmaker from the Philippines to share his thoughts about writing and directing films that are local but still able to reach out to an international audience He will share his experiences in first making an award-winning short film and then graduating to making an award-winning feature film. Students and young filmmakers will benefit from his methods, insights, feelings and aspirations for filmmaking in a challenging and competitive environment.

TALK : WORLD-CLASS CINEMA: VISIONS, ASPIRATIONS AND TRANSFORMATION FOR THE NATIONAL FILM INDUSTRY
This session brings together veterans in the industry and the new generation of tech
savvy and internationally-recognized filmmakers and film festival veterans. They will give
their individual points-of-view about Malaysian cinema, ranging from ‘how it was in the
old days’ and the necessity for moving forward in a world of fast-changing filmscapes,
taking into account the advances in technology that is determining how films are made,
distributed, promoted and marketed worldwide.
